Aptitude Diagnostics and Potential Analysis
In the final phase of a personnel decision the question is rarely who can do the most — but who fits this task and this company. That question can be measured instead of felt.
Why gut feeling often gets executive appointments wrong
A job interview reliably measures one quality: how well someone conducts job interviews. Anyone who comes across as confident, articulate and likeable receives better ratings — regardless of how he or she later performs in the business. That is not a criticism of decision-makers but a well-documented pattern.
Aptitude diagnostics does not correct this effect by replacing the interview. It adds information that systematically stays invisible in conversation: cognitive performance under time pressure, stable personality traits, motivational structure and actual behaviour in simulated leadership situations.
The benefit shows not on the day of the offer but two years later — in the number of appointments that have held. That is why diagnostics is not an upsell for us but an integral part of demanding mandates.
What we assess
Which components are used is decided by the position — not by a catalogue. Four levels are available:
Cognitive performance
Comprehension, deductive reasoning, processing speed. The factor with the highest predictive power for professional success — and the one an interview captures worst.
Personality structure
Resilience, conscientiousness, openness, social orientation. Assessed with standardised procedures that provide comparative values against relevant reference groups instead of against gut feeling.
Motivation and interests
What drives someone, what keeps them. Particularly in decisions to move at executive level, the motivational situation determines whether an appointment still holds after 18 months.
Behaviour in simulations
Structured interviews and assessment elements reveal leadership behaviour, handling of conflict and prioritisation in situations modelled on your everyday business.
Four typical occasions
Validating an external selection
Before deciding between two strong final candidates. Diagnostics delivers what the CV and the interview leave open — and makes the decision defensible in committee.
Internal promotion
The best technical expert is not automatically the best manager. Before a promotion it becomes clear whether the motivation to lead and the resilience are actually there — before two careers are damaged.
Identifying potential in the team
For individuals or entire divisions: where the development areas lie, who will carry responsibility in future, how staff deployment can be aligned with talent.
Succession in a family business
One of the hardest decisions there is. We create a neutral, scientifically sound basis — for those handing over as much as for the next generation caught between expectation and their own path.
How a procedure runs
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Requirement analysis | Together we clarify what the position really demands — the basis for any selection of procedures under DIN 33430. |
| Selection of procedures | We assemble the components that fit the question. No standard package, but a reasoned combination. |
| Implementation | Testing and interview, on site or online, as a rule over half a day to a full day. Candidates are told in advance what to expect. |
| Report and feedback | You receive a written report with a clear recommendation. The person tested receives personal feedback — that is part of fair application. |
Diagnostics in-house: the Profiling Institut
We do not run aptitude diagnostics on the side. With the Profiling Institut, our subsidiary, we cover the entire field of aptitude diagnostics and potential analysis — from career orientation for school and university students through to positional assessment for experienced executives.
For you as a company that means: the procedures are conducted and evaluated by the same diagnosticians who work with them every day — not by a consultant operating a bought-in test package. You will find detailed information at profiling-institut.de.
Frequently asked questions about aptitude diagnostics
How long does a procedure take?
Depending on the question, half a day to a full day, sometimes split into an online part and a personal interview. You normally receive the report within a few working days.
How do candidates react to being tested?
In our experience positively, when the reason and the process are transparent and feedback is promised. Many executives read it as a sign that a company is taking the appointment seriously.
Is diagnostics also useful for internal promotions?
Especially there. With internal candidates, known technical performance overlays the question of leadership aptitude. A neutral assessment separates the two — and creates acceptance for the decision among colleagues.
What does DIN 33430 mean?
The standard governs the quality of occupational aptitude assessments: from requirement analysis through the selection of suitable procedures to the qualification of the people who conduct and interpret them.
Can diagnostics be combined with the search itself?
Yes, that is the normal case. In mandates using direct approach we apply the procedures before the final selection — without an additional provider and without friction.
A decision you want to validate?
Describe the question to us. We will tell you which procedure fits — and whether it is worth it in your case at all.
